Au détour d’une conversation entre De Jeunes Gens Modernes sur des lieux authentiques et incroyables à Paris, certains d’entre nous avaient évoqué leurs passages dans les établissements Gaétan Lanzani, une visite qui s’est avérée une expérience mémorable. Le bouche-à-oreille ou les conseils avisés d’un professionnel nous avaient mis sur la piste de ce loueur de décors, niché au cœur du 11eme arrondissement. La curiosité nous avait d’abord poussé à questionner Google, mais le moteur de recherche était resté avare en informations et en images… A la sortie du métro Voltaire, il fallait prendre la route vers le mystère… Quelques temps plus tard, une rencontre avec le jeune Gaétan Lanzani, qui porte le même prénom que son arrière grand-père fondateur, allait enfin nous permettre de lever un peu le voile…
During a conversation on the amazing and authentic places in Paris, a few of us exposed their visit to the Gaetan Lanzani establishments. A journey that all the persons that experienced it can remember. Word of mouth and advises of a professional, leads us on the trail of this furniture renter, located in the heart of the 11th arrondissement. The curiosity told us to have a look on Google first but internet was lacking of information and pictures… At the exit of the Voltaire tube station, we took the path of this mystery… Later, we met the young Gaetan Lanzani, which carries the same name as his great grandfather, the fondator, and will let us understand what this place is all about.
Une histoire de famille
Gaétan Lanzani fonde durant l’entre-deux-guerres une entreprise de copie de meubles de style et de restauration de meubles anciens, l’histoire s’écrit depuis de génération en génération. Au début des années 70, les petits fils, Christian et Didier développent l’activité de location de décors pour le cinéma, le théâtre, les photos et l’évènementiel. Ils ont entre autre fournit les productions des films comme “La Grande Vadrouille”, “Marie-Antoinette” de Sofia Coppola ou le plus récent “Mesrine : L’instinct de mort”. Aujourd’hui, Gaétan Lanzani, issu de la quatrième génération, vient porter sa pierre à l’édifice.
Un lieu atypique
Le 19 rue Basfroi nous tire vers un voyage à travers le temps et l’espace, on y perd tous ses repères, la cour accueille gargouilles, guillotines, reproductions de statues grecques, cabines téléphoniques et autres objets insolites. Mais ce n’est rien comparé à ce que l’on trouve dans ce bâtiment de 5000 mètres carrés où des escaliers nous mènent dans un dédale de pièces jonchées par un parquet qui a traversé les âges. Les salles et les bric-à-brac s’accumulent, on s’y perd facilement, heureusement qu’un guide nous conduit vers la pièce aux assises, en traversant la magnifique pièce aux malles et valises anciennes.

Après avoir trouvé notre bonheur, on passe forcément par les bureaux de la maison, centre névralgique du bâtiment où sont regroupés médailles militaires, objets en ivoires, peignes anciens en cornes, oiseaux naturalisés exotiques et autres trouvailles de grande valeur. Un bureau comme on n’en voit plus, dénué de tout système informatique et où les employés communiquent sur tout le site avec des interphones reliant chacune des pièces. Au pied du pupitre de Didier, dort un épagneul breton, un perroquet se ballade à travers le bureau, non loin de ses congénères empaillés.
A family story
The Gaetan Lanzani company was launched between the two world wars to produce copies of stylish furnitures and to repair old ones. Since then, the company is owned by the family, generation after generation. At the beginning of the 70’s, the grandsons Didier and Christian diversified the activity by renting decorations to the cinema, theatre, photography and events. They worked with famous French movies like “La Grande Vadrouille”, “Mesrine: L’instinct de mort” and big Hollywood productions like “Marie Antoinette” by Sophia Coppola. Today, Gaetan Lanzani, from the fourth generation, has join them to contribute to the growth.
An unusual place
Entering the 19 rue de Basfroi gets us make a journey through space and time, where you can loose your sense of understanding. The courtyard is packed with gargoyles, guillotine, reproductions of ancient greek statues, phone booth and other weird furnitures. But this is nothing compares to what we can find in this 5000 meters squared building. Some stairs leads you to an incredible number of rooms, with an old wooden floor. Rooms are packed with a huge diversity of objects, where you get easily lost, but a guide is there to show you the way to what you are looking for: furnitures, seats, old leather luggages….

When you finally got what you want, you have to go to the main office of the house, the brain of the building, where you can find all precious and valuable objects like military medals, ivory things, or ancient horn combs, or even taxidermy like exotic birds. Nowadays, it is rare to find a so special office, without any informatics system and where employees communicates through speakers and microphones on the all site. Beside the desk of the owner, a hunt dog is sleeping and a parrot is wandering around the rooms, close to his stuffed congener.
