Si aux yeux de certains la jeune chanteuse ne mérite pas ce culte naissant, pour d’autres elle est d’ores et déjà une légende. Deux albums, et une carrière éclair qui lui fît connaître les plus grandes récompenses musicales comme les pires pages des tabloïds, sur tout cela le temps sera seul juge. Seule certitude : il reste apparemment difficile de dépasser les 27 ans quand la musique coule dans vos veines. Bienvenue au Club des 27, Amy.
This article won’t teach you nothing, Amy Winehouse died this July 23, 2011 at the age of 27 years. If to some, the young singer does not deserve the cult, for others she’s already a legend. Légende mystique, hasard macabre ou authentique fardeau des étoiles filantes de la musique, le “Club des 27″ est certainement un peu de tout cela à la fois. S’il fascine autant qu’il agace, on ne peut s’empêcher de reconnaître la troublante coïncidence qui a voulu que soient fauchées toutes ces météorites du rock (de la musique en général et de l’art également) à l’âge fatidique de 27 ans. La seule chose qui soit certaine au sujet de ce club, c’est que sa légende n’aurait pas perduré s’il n’était composé uniquement de musiciens influents, qui ont tous comptés dans l’histoire.

If it annoys as it fascinates, one can not help acknowledging the troubling coincidence that have cut short all these meteorites of rock (from the music in general and art as well) to the fateful age of 27. De Brian Jones, membre fondateur et 1er guitariste des Rolling Stones (mort noyé dans une piscine, avec l’éternel doute d’un assassinat) à Robert Johnson, bluesman mythique, les noms défilent et nous n’oublieront pas Jean-Michel Basquiat et Dash Snow, artistes eux aussi morts à 27 ans.

Alors Amy, icône ou pas ? Si pour beaucoup la réponse est évidente, l’avenir le dira aux autres et d’ici là, il faudra rester prudent quant aux albums et autres enregistrements posthumes qui ne devraient pas manquer de sortir dans les prochains mois. En attendant, on gardera quoi qu’il arrive le souvenir d’une jeune femme à la voix rare et à l’écriture résolument moderne qui a su, du haut de son mètre cinquante-sept, défier les Lady Gaga et autres poupées télécommandées pour inscrire à jamais sa signature de “diva du 3ème millénaire” dans l’histoire de la soul music. Repose en paix, Amy.
So Amy, icon or not ? While for many the answer is obvious, for the others time will tell and until then, we must remain cautious about the posthumous albums and other recordings that should not be missed out in the coming months. Meanwhile, we keep the memory of a young woman with a rare voice and modern writing and that knew, from his five-seven feet, challenge dolls like Lady Gaga and other remote girls to impose her eternal “diva of the third millennium” signature in the history of soul music.
